Interpersonal violence (IPV): Intentional use of power or control over another person through physical, sexual, or emotional actions or threats.

Peer assault: Intentional acts of aggression by a peer or group of peers on another child.

posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD): A mental health problem that develops after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. Symptoms include re-experiencing the event (e.g., nightmares), avoidance of reminders, negative thoughts about the event, and physical reactions (e.g., hypervigilance).

sexual orientation

Sexual orientation: An individual’s pattern of emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attraction (or a combination of these) to individuals of the opposite gender, the same gender, to both sexes or more than one gender.

trauma

Trauma: An event that is scary and comes with serious injury, death, or sexual violence (or risk of any of those). It counts if it happens directly to you, you see or hear it happen or learn about it from a family member or close friend (e.g., death).
