Salute to Southampton
The Family Safety First Community
Over the past three years, Southampton Elementary School has participated in a research trial of KEYS©, a program that trains parents and others who care for young children to prevent physical and emotional injury. In a sense, KEYS© unlocks each adult’s potential to protect the children around them. Topics include child sexual abuse prevention, bullying, cyber safety and effective parenting strategies (to counter excessive corporal punishment). There is research to support the fact that for every adult trained to protect, ten children are potentially protected in the community.
KEYS© has been well received and the trial research indicated significant and continuing changes in knowledge and protective behavior after taking KEYS©. The school would like to offer it to all incoming parents each year. To date, Child HELP Partnership at St. John’s University has funded the project completely. In order to continue, the community has been asked to raise some funds to contribute to the effort.
